In addition to the following - you can find valuable information by going to the Great Pyrenees Club of America site.  Just CLICK HERE!

Throughout these pages, we hope to provide you with the tools you will need to make an informed decision.  Not just as to where you will purchase a Great Pyrenees, but IF you should purchase a Great Pyrenees at all -- or any dog, for that matter.

There's a lot of reading material out there about various breeds, including the Great Pyrenees.  We've attempted to give you some links to such reference material within our site.  But there's just no substitute for meeting them up-close and personal.  A great start to doing just that is to attend some of the AKC events in the area. There you'll not only be able to meet a variety of breeds, but breeders as well.

An AKC event is not a "beauty pageant".  It's a venue by which serious breeders (those who consider themselves "guardians" of their chosen breed) seek the affirmation of their peers (the judges) that they are conforming to the standard (written blueprint) of their breed in the selection of their stock. The exhibitors you meet, by and large, are dedicated to protecting the breed - to make sure successive generations will represent the breed in its best and truest form.

Anyone can be a breeder - but it takes time, patience, continuous vigilance, total dedication - and yes, money, to be a good one. That's the kind of dedication you want behind any animal you might choose to join your family.

A few tips for approaching exhibitors and their dogs at the show:

  • Prior to ring call, exhibitors are concentrating on the task at hand and may not be open to in depth discussions.  It may be you'll need to request a more appropriate time to visit with them.
  • Dogs are painstakingly prepared to look their best for the judge.  Please ask before you or your family members approach to pet a dog.  This goes for all dogs at the show, not just Pyrenees or those ready to enter the ring.
  • Ring calls are not flexible.  We must be prepared to enter the ring when our armband number is called.  Be aware that you may not have the exhibitors full attention, and conversations may be abruptly interrupted.
  • Please remember that while most of us have, and enjoy, children, they can also present a huge distraction for the dogs.  Keep children close to you. Do not allow them to wander around the dog show unattended.  Teach them to always ask permission before approaching any dog -- and last, but not least, leave the chocolate at home!
