AKC is primarily a registry of purebred dogs. While it signifies that an animal's lineage is "purebred" according to the records, until recently, it - like any other registry - has only been as reliable as the those utilizing it's service. With the availability of DNA testing on a more widespread level, AKC has taken steps to tighten its control. Keep in mind; however, that it is still simply a "registration", or record-keeping body. AKC papers do NOT mean that an animal is physically, or mentally, sound - nor does it mean that the breeder of record is "reputable" Those are determinations you must make by performing "due diligence" when purchasing an animal. AKC also oversees the sport of purebred dogs through conformation and performance events, i.e.: dog shows and trials. You can learn more about the American Kennel Club HERE. AKC conformation events are not "beauty pageants". The dogs entered there are not simply competing to see who goes around the ring "prettiest", who "prances the cutest", who is the biggest, or the smallest. There are set guidelines by which the dogs are to be judged, depending upon the event. Such events are a venue by which serious breeders (those who consider themselves "guardians" of their chosen breed) seek the affirmation of their peers (the judges) that they are conforming to the standard (written blueprint) of their breed in the selection of their stock. The breed standard lays down the framework by which a Great Pyrenees is just that - a Great Pyrenees. A Pyr is not a white Saint Bernard or a Newfoundland of another color. Remember the old adage: If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck -- it's a duck. The standard dictates that a Great Pyrenees be more than just big and white; it must be built like a Pyrenees, have the head of a Pyrenees, have the proper coat of a Pyrenees, possess the stamina of a Pyrenees - and the heart and soul of a Pyrenees. Simply being registered as a Great Pyrenees does not give it these qualities. The exhibitors you meet at AKC events, by and large, are dedicated to protecting the breed - to making sure successive generations will represent the breed in its best and truest form. There are many, many breeds out there. Your choice of family companions should be based on which one best suits your family, not only in looks, but in such things as health needs, general personality and attitude, athleticism and care requirements. Make use of the vast amount of information out there to research your breed thoroughly before making a decision. Click Here for more food for thought! |
